About KAP

KAP speaks up on the issues that are important to both crop and livestock producers. We affect the changes needed for farmers to remain successful and profitable.

Our mandate is to ensure primary production in Manitoba remains profitable, sustainable and globally competitive.

KAP is a general farm policy organization that takes direction from its members – including farmers and farm commodity organizations. We work with governments, industry and stakeholders on overarching issues that affect all farmers. We act as spokespersons for Manitoba's farmers, engaging media and other stakeholders in understanding the issues facing primary producers. We promote agriculture and its contributions to the Manitoba and Canadian economies.

Our Grassroots Democracy

KAP members from 12 districts discuss current issues in agriculture, passing resolutions they believe will address their concerns.

Each district takes its resolutions to one of the three advisory council meetings during the year, or to the KAP annual meeting. Here, they are debated by representatives from all districts. Member commodity (producer) organizations can also put forward resolutions. If passed, a resolution becomes official KAP policy. At this point, the executive team and the board of directors, with support from KAP staff, take action on these policies.

This could be in the form of direct advocacy through face to face meetings with elected officials, presentations to legislative committees, letters to government officials, news releases, solicitation of support from other stakeholders, participation in consultations, or events to draw attention to the issue.

There are also seven KAP policy committees which are made up of KAP members with expertise in specific topic areas. They provide research, support and recommendations to the organization.
