Business risk management (BRM) includes a suite of agricultural programs that include AgriStability, AgriInvest, AgriRecovery and AgriInsurance. All programs are funded through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The suite of programs provides financial support to farmers in the event of production shortfall or other situations outside their control (e.g., economic blockade).
KAP has long advocated for improvements to the current suite of programming. Farmers operate in a frequently changing economic and climatic environment that requires programming improvements to adapt to the changing farming landscape
AgriStability
Recently, KAP has been lobbying the Government for changes to AgriStability – along with other industry groups – that would remove the reference margin limit and increase the compensation rate from 70 to 80 percent. In March 2021 the federal government announced an agreement between the provinces and territories that resulted in the removal of the reference margin limit.
The federal government has offered the provinces and territories the option to increase the AgriStability compensation rate to 80 percent. KAP will continue to lobby the Manitoba government to accept this offer along with advocating for additional changes to BRM programs that include improvements to timeliness, predictability, simplicity and overall effectiveness.
