Waterhemp and Palmer Amaranth

Whereas waterhemp and Palmer amaranth found in Canada and the United States has confirmed resistance to various herbicide groups; and,


Whereas in Ontario the herbicide resistant waterhemp causes on average a yield loss of 43% in soybeans and an average 19% yield loss in corn; and,


Whereas waterhemp and Palmer amaranth are relatively new weeds in Canadian agriculture and many producers have little information or awareness about this weed and its capabilities; now, therefore be it


Resolved, that KAP lobby the Government of Manitoba and the Government of Canada to provide funding for waterhemp and Palmer amaranth that would advance testing on resistant tendencies of these noxious weeds; and be it further


Resolved, that KAP lobby the Government of Manitoba to allocate resources to develop strategies against these noxious weeds (e.g., crop rotation, cover crops, reduced seed row width); and be it further


Resolved, that KAP lobby the Government of Manitoba to fund research that would provide farmers with an effective herbicide to help manage waterhemp and Palmer amaranth.

Update

 The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership has allocated funds for projects targeting invasive weeds. KAP continues to advocate for additional changes.
